New Year, time to start again…

Last year I started writing small reviews about the movies I had been watching for the first time. I started off well but as the year progressed and I became increasingly busy with work & planning my wedding I ended up putting this on the back burner and never got round to starting it again. This is a revamp of a failed 2017 project where I tried challenging myself to watch as many new movies as possible, with very little rewatches of old favourites. I ended up watching a total of 209 new movies last year, it was certainly a mixed year for movies to say the least. After watching a plethora of different movies across a wide range of genres I have to say the 5 best I watched were: The Silence of the Lambs, The Fault in Our Stars, Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs and To Kill a Mockingbird.

There were many other outstanding movies that I watched over the course of the last 365 days but these were definitely the cream of the crop. Some of these picks you may be surprised that I’ve only just watched them for the first time as The Silence of Lambs and To Kill a Mockingbird in particular are regulars in lists such as top 100 movies to see before you die. Despite my year being filled with mostly good quality cinematic viewing, you can never watch a winner all the time, there were a few stinkers that I had the displeasure of watching, the worst 5 were: Catwoman, Jeepers Creepers 3, Elektra, Rent and The Ex.

Some of these (Catwoman & Elektra) I had been putting off watching for a long while, but owned them on DVD so I had to least get my money’s worth and hope they weren’t as bad as everybody had suggested. Unfortunately for me, they were. Others, like Jeepers Creepers 3, I had such high hopes for. I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie, it was different & the villain was executed perfectly. The sequel then came along and although it wasn’t as good as the first, it was still a decent attempt to continue the story, which was enjoyable to watch. When I caught wind that the third was coming out, I was drawn to it and was excited to see how the series continued. Sadly, the third and hopefully last Jeepers Creepers movie just spoiled the trilogy. Despite my initial excitement, there was absolutely nothing that could be taken away from this as a positive, such a shame I got to witness a potentially great horror franchise die.

As 2018 begins, my goal is the exact same as 2017, watch as many new movies as I can throughout the year and share my thoughts with whoever is interested. Only difference between this year and last is I plan to keep up to date with my reviews and see the year through. Thank you for reading, please watch this space as reviews will follow shortly.

Happy new year
